A Tech Talk with Bellmir

Bellmir, who leads front-end work in the BS Crew, is giving this round's tech talk. He is interested in connecting technology and people, and sees the talks as a way to share what he knows.

This session covers caching strategy and advanced use of TanStack Query. Because it is something the team uses daily, he plans to cover both how to apply it and the questions worth thinking through together.

The talk he remembers most was on SVG, data visualisation, and performance. It dealt with representing complex data visually without giving up speed, and the comparison between SVG and Canvas drew a long run of questions and discussion.

The technology he is watching most closely is the meta-framework: React Query and Next.js. They simplify server state and data fetching, and combining SSR and CSR well can lift the whole user experience. For performance he is also following Core Web Vitals and build tools such as Vite.

He has had a session go wrong. Once he pitched the material too high and lost the room. Since then he leans on analogies and concrete cases, and adjusts the deck to the audience in front of him.

Next he wants to go deeper on AI: personalising UI and UX with it, building interactive interfaces on top of generative tools, and understanding how far it can change the experience itself.

Asked what he wants a tech talk to say, his answer was that technology is not just a tool but a way to connect people and make things better, and that it is open to everyone. His advice to first-time speakers: rather than trying to deliver everything, make the central message clear and help people feel why it matters.
